Existential Migration

Home, Belonging and not ‘being-at-home’ in the world

In his academic research, Dr. Greg Madison describes a new kind of migration — one not previously recognised — which he calls existential migration.

Unlike economic, forced, or lifestyle migration, existential migration is a deliberate choice to leave one’s homeland in search of a deeper sense of personal existence.

Common themes include:
• The drive to fulfil one’s full potential
• A love of freedom and independence
• Curiosity about life’s mystery
• Valuing difference and the unfamiliar over comfort and convention

Dr. Madison’s book, The End of Belonging, explores these stories with clarity and empathy, suggesting that we may be entering an age of global homelessness.

Dr. Madison offers sessions, seminars, and workshops to help clients and professionals increase their awareness of the complexity of issues of home, belonging, and leaving home.

The insights gained from the concept of Existential Migration help us all think more clearly about what ‘home’ is for us.

“It would be challenging for anyone to read this book without asking some original questions of themselves, and possibly finding some surprising answers, so for those of us interested in existential philosophy or psychotherapy, personally or professionally, it is a good read.”
